The Unthanks

The Unthanks are masters of storytelling. Using the traditional music of the North East as a starting point, the band collect gems of story & sound, weaving them together with the rich influence of artists like Miles Davis, Sufjan Stevens, & Tom Waits to create music both modern & timeless.

“The Unthanks are capable of such beauty that sometimes I can hardly bear to listen to them.”  Martin Freeman

Regulars on BBC 6Music & Mercury Prize Nominees, The Unthanks are equally at home on Radios 2, 3 or 4 reframing history & drawing together the worlds of folk, jazz, orchestral, electronic & rock music.

Ye Vagabonds

The Mac Gloinn brothers  – Brian & Diarmuid – first performed in the streets together as buskers & have since evolved into a robust collective a unique ensemble of layered acoustic & electric guitar, trumpet, upright bass, harmonium, fiddle, & the blood harmony of the siblings’ distinctive, multi-hued voices.

“Sparkling” ***** The Irish Times

At “the fore of a new wave of Irish folk”, Ye Vagabonds won Best Track, Best Album & Best Folk Group at RTE Radio 1 Folk Awards. They’ve played with Phoebe Bridgers, Vampire Weekend & count Paul Mescal amongst their fans. Their much anticipated new studio album, All Tied Together, was recorded live in an old Galway house, & is released via Rough Trade.

The Breath

The Breath is, singer/flautist Ríoghnach Connolly (BBC Folk Singer of the Year) & guitarist Stuart McCallum (The Cinematic Orchestra). An unlikely pairing of a softly-spoken guitar whizz & a folk singer with a larger-than-life personality & a powerful voice to match.

“(Their music) unfolds like a paper flower.” The Financial Times *****

For them it’s all about the song, their exquisitely crafted, personal, heartfelt songs are as likely to touch on childhood summers & first love as cultural dislocation, post- colonial injustices & grief. But it’s Ríoghnach’s impassioned delivery & extraordinary stop-you-in-your-tracks voice, coupled with Stuart’s understated brilliance that makes them so engaging.
